How Your Child’s Changing Voice with time

Posted on January 20, 2023February 3, 2023 by Dr. Humaira Sikander

As children grow and develop, their voices change in a number of ways. One of the most noticeable changes is the pitch of their voice, which can drop significantly as they go through puberty.

During childhood, the vocal cords are shorter and thinner, which results in a higher-pitched voice. As children enter puberty, their vocal cords begin to lengthen and thicken, which causes the pitch of their voice to drop. This process is called vocal cord maturation, and it typically occurs between the ages of 11 and 14 for girls, and between the ages of 12 and 16 for boys.

During this process, children may experience a number of changes in their voice. They may notice that their voice cracks or breaks when they speak, and that it may be difficult to control the pitch of their voice. This is normal, and is a sign that their vocal cords are changing.

As the vocal cords continue to mature, children will notice that their voice becomes deeper and more resonant. This change in pitch is most noticeable in boys, who may experience a significant drop in their voice, going from a high-pitched child’s voice to a deeper, adult-like voice. Girls also go through a similar process but the change may not be as dramatic.

In addition to changes in pitch, children may also notice changes in the quality of their voice. Their voice may become more resonant and full, and they may be able to produce more volume and projection. They may also develop better control over their voice, which can lead to improved speaking and singing skills.

It is important to note that every child’s voice will change differently and at different rate, as it is influenced by various factors like genetics, hormones, and overall health.

As children’s voices change, it is also important for them to take care of their vocal cords. This includes drinking plenty of water, avoiding smoking and excessive yelling, and getting enough sleep. It is also important for them to practice good posture, as slouching can put unnecessary strain on the vocal cords.

In conclusion, children’s voices go through a significant change as they grow and develop. This change is caused by the maturation of the vocal cords, which results in a deeper, more resonant voice. This process can be accompanied by changes in pitch, volume, and quality of the voice, and may take several years to complete. Parents and caregivers should be aware of these changes and help their children take care of their vocal cords during this time.
